- Contributing to formulations, material testing, and recommendations while correlating material properties and filtration studies to processes.
- Developing new filters, filtration membranes and application-specific products to meet emerging technological needs.
- Managing projects with a focus on deliverables, knowledge sharing, and collaboration across teams to ensure successful outcomes.
We are looking for a self-driven candidate who is motivated to make an impact in the development of new technologies and join a dynamic entrepreneurial team.. The R&D Scientist I independently plans and executes scientific experiments to develop innovative products, improve processes, and generate data that supports technical and business objectives. This role contributes scientific insight, leads segments of R&D projects, and supports cross-functional collaboration to drive innovation and commercialization.
- Design, execute, and analyze complex experiments with minimal supervision. This may include upstream experiments to support cell culture and bioreactor process development.
- Develop and optimize formulations, processes, and analytical methods.
- Interpret data (including cell culture performance) and translate results into actionable recommendations.
- Hands-on experimental work involving the characterization of material properties, set up, operation, and maintenance of bioreactors across batches, fed-batch, and perfusion modes (ATF/TFF).
- Process development work in the laboratory involving testing equipment, chemical processes, and testing materials and products (membranes, filters, polymers, etc.) inclusive of mammalian suspension cell work (CHO and HEK293 lines using both 2D and 3D culture systems.
- Carry out filter testing, failure analysis, lifetime studies, comparative performance evaluations using appropriate instrumentation that may involve chemical analysis, microscopy, thermal and mechanical properties evaluation.
- Operate both singleuse and glass bioreactor systems and associated equipment (controllers, pumps, perfusion setups, hollow fiber filters).
- Lead small-scale R&D projects or technical workstreams, including resource planning and coordination.
- Prepare detailed technical documentation, including protocols, reports, and presentations.
- Maintain documentation and support SOP development as we build out upstream lab capabilities.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Engineering, Production. MTS) to support product development scale-up.
- Stay current with relevant scientific literature, technologies, and competitive trends.
- Mentor junior scientists and research associates as needed.
- Ensure compliance with all safety, quality, and regulatory standards.
This is an on-site role based out of our headquarters in Camarillo, CA.
The skills and experience you’ll need:
- Bachelor’s degree in STEM-related field relevant to the operations of the organization with 5+ years of relevant experience or Master’s degree with 2+ years of relevant experience or PhD with 1+ years of experience.
- Strong foundation in relevant scientific principles and laboratory techniques.
- Proficiency with different laboratory instrumentation used in characterizing material properties.
- Experience in experimental design, statistical analysis, and technical problem-solving.
- Proven capabilities in writing effective reports and data analysis.
- Excellent attention to detail and documentation practices.
- Demonstrated ability to lead portions of R&D projects and contribute to project strategy.
- Mechanical aptitudes (operation of power tools, equipment repair/troubleshooting).
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Strong analytical skills to carry out effective data analysis.
- Proficient in scientific documentation and communication.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills to present results through written reports and presentations.
- Work collaboratively with other team members and interact with other departments such as the laboratory and engineering departments, in order to achieve the objectives of the R&D team.
- Develop and foster professional relationships (internally and externally) that help the department and Meissner grow and sustain our competitive advantage by creating new marketplace opportunities and strengthening our current positions.
- Self-motivated, organized, and capable of managing multiple priorities.
- Experience with regulatory submissions, technology, transfer, or scale-up.
- Proficient with programs including MS Office Suite.
- Familiarity with design of experiments (DOE) or Six Sigma methodologies.
- Proficient in statistical analysis software and mathematical fundamentals of statistics and error analysis.

US BASE PAY SCALE $87,500 - $108,000
The base pay scale for this role is what Meissner reasonably expects to pay for the position although actual pay may vary from this scale depending on an applicant's experience.
